Facebook rebrands, changes its name to Meta

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, said that the business's holding company will be renamed to Meta in order to focus on the creation of a metaverse.

On Thursday, Zuckerberg revealed the term change at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference, describing the metaverse as "a digital world layered on top of our own that combines virtual reality headgear and augmented reality."

The rebranding comes after a slew of unfavorable news stories about Facebook, based on information stolen by Frances Haugen, an ex-employee and whistleblower.

What Mark Zuckerberg has to say about Meta?

The metaverse, according to Zuckerberg, is the next frontier in linking people, much as social networking was when it first began. The new name reflects the fact that customers will no longer be required to use Facebook to access the company's other services in the future.

"Right now, our brand is so closely associated with one product that it can't reasonably reflect everything we're doing now, let alone in the future," Zuckerberg explained. "We believe the metaverse will be the mobile internet's replacement," says the author.

All of our goods, including our applications, now have a common goal: to assist in the creation of the metaverse. And now we have a moniker that accurately represents the scope of our work.

"The word "meta" is derived from a Greek word that means "beyond." It represents to me the fact that there is always more to construct and a new chapter to the narrative to tell. Ours is a tale that began in a dorm room and has grown into a family of applications that people use to connect with one another, discover their voice, and launch businesses, communities, and movements that have changed the world."

"The metaverse will not be built by a single corporation. It will be constructed by artists and developers who will create new interoperable experiences and digital things that will open a much greater creative economy than the one now confined by today's platforms and rules," he added.

What you need to know

  • The shift solely affects the parent business, not the individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp.
  • The new holding company, Meta, will include Facebook, as well as apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and the virtual reality firm Oculus.
  • The firm indicated via a blog post that it aims to begin trading under the new stock ticker, MVRS, on December 1.
