During Chelsea's victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, they established a new Premier League possession record.

The Blues won 3-0 in Tyneside, with a brace from Reece James and a world-record-breaking penalty from Jorginho securing the three points away from home.

Chelsea's lead at the top of the table has grown to three points over Liverpool and five points over Manchester City.

According to the official Chelsea website, their 79 percent possession rate versus Newcastle was their best since a 2-1 victory over the Magpies in 2018.

It's also the club's greatest possession record since Thomas Tuchel took over as manager in January.

Chelsea's possession didn't result in any attempts on target in the first half, but the Blues pressed hard after the interval and were rewarded with three goals at the final whistle.
With his goal at St James' Park, James has now scored four goals this season, with the other two coming against Arsenal earlier in the season and Norwich City last weekend.

Soon after the hour mark, he controlled a looping cross in the area before blasting it into the upper left corner for his first goal of the weekend. After a deflected Ruben Loftus-Cheek attempt, the right wing-back added his second 10 minutes later, smashing the ball past Darlow.

After Kai Havertz was fouled in the box, Jorginho closed off the performance with a penalty.

Chelsea's next Champions League match is against Malmo on Tuesday night.
